GENE NEWBOLD is a singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist, performing locally, and contributing to the music and theater scene in Eugene since the mid-1980s. Gene cut his teeth performing throughout his youth in musical theater, starring in Into the Woods, Cinderella, and Oliver!, with supporting roles in a dozen other plays. Gene returned to the theater last summer, bringing Jake Howell to life in The Shedd’s production of Girl Crazy. Writing songs and leading bands for 30 years, Gene has traversed alternative, jazz, rock, southern rock, Britpop, indie, folk, alt-country, and singer-songwriter genres. His latest solo record, Before The Night Is Up (Bless Yr Heart/Stray Pony Records) was released on major streaming platforms in 2023, and was recorded in Muscle Shoals, featuring legendary "Swamper" bassist, David Hood. With alt-rock side project, Yeezy Hawzy, Gene released a new single in early 2025. Holding a degree in Psychology, and a Master’s in Teaching, Gene is also a middle school Arts Educator, and Theater Director in Eugene, as well as Music Director at Faith Center.
Gene has been a featured vocalist and guitarist in Shedd Presents Ring of Fire, Long, Long Time, The Wrecking Crew, and Forever Young. Look for him next in The Right Thing, and Take it Easy.
